  • Moving On

Okay, for the first time in, like, three or four moves, I will only be working part time in the five weeks leading up to our move.

I am not naturally organized.  (Stop laughing, Mom.)  I can, however, fake it for five weeks.

So, I want your top five tips for an organized move.

    Go.  (Please.)

  • My brother and sister-in-law moved to a fairly large house with many bedrooms, bathrooms, and a full finished basement. Instead of labeling their boxes with “John’s Bedroom” or “Downstairs bath,” They numbered each room in their new house and correspondingly numbered their boxes and furnature. The movers found this to be an excellent system and had no questions about where stuff went. Even if you are not using profesional movers, I think this is a great idea.

Label one box “Important stuff I’ll need right away.” Start putting all your important papers in it. Even if you need it in the next few weeks, you’ll know where it is. (Tip- Don’t seal this box until the last minute!)

The last time I moved, I labeled the boxes I didn’t need to open right away “Storage.” That way I knew not to search through them for sheets or the frying pan or whatever I was looking for in the moment.

    Those are my best tips.

  • 1) pack essential kitchen stuff, sheets, and towels together and put in the truck LAST so it’s the first thing out- also a shower curtain!

    2) purge as much as you can3) pack out of season clothes and holiday decorations, etc. together and send right to storage4) pack your books by priority- so if you take a while unpacking or getting shelves purchased and assembled you have what you need for writing or teaching right away.
simple stuff but it makes a difference.

  • Good suggestions all!
Shower curtain.  Would *never* have thought of that.  Ever.

  • it’s definitely one of those things you don’t think about until you go to take a shower…

also- cleaning products and trash bags easily accessible (or have amazon deliver along with toilet paper and paper towels)- and pack a suitcase as if you’re taking a trip so you can take your time unpacking if need be (though i’m pretty sure everyone does this).
