  • Lunch Dreams

You know, when I started making the boys’ lunches, paying a little more attention to aesthetic considerations, I had this fantasy–I’m sure it’s a typical one among moms–that one day my children would come home and say, “Gosh, Mom, all the other kids are so jealous of my healthy, attractive, and tasty lunch!  Thanks, Mom!”

Yes, I said it was a fantasy.

I particularly overestimated four- and five-year-olds’ aesthetic sensitivities.

Most of them eat the lunch that is prepared at the school (Campbell’s soup, frozen pizza, jello-fruit cups, etc.), but some bring their own.

One of Theo’s classmates brings–I swear, I am not making this up–three jars of baby food as her lunch.

And, of course, the preschool standard of gustatory perfection is the dreaded Lunchable.

So, it wasn’t too surprising, this morning, when I decided to get clever and make cantaloupe-and-banana skewers for Theo’s lunch, to hear him exclaim . . .

. . . “Mom!  This is awesome!  It’s going to be as good as Lunchables!”

I suppose I should just be grateful that there wasn’t an “almost” in there.
