  • Rabbit Proof Fence

    Houston, we have fencing!

Yesterday, Stephen and I (mostly Stephen) put fencing around the garden.  The peas and lettuce had already been victimized by rabbit invaders, although not beyond recovery.

    So, there we are:

You can barely see it from the deck.  The green planter is where it is because that’s where the “gate” is going to be.  We haven’t yet figured out how that’s going to work, so we put the planter there to keep it closed.  (‘Course, Little Bunny Foo-foo probably just used it as a stepping stone to get in.)

So there we are.  A few additional pepper plants planted, but not much else.  I’m supposed to get a big load of compost today so that I can fill the rest of the boxes and get the rest of the summer crops underway–limas, watermelon, sweet potatoes, cukes, eggplant.  But it’s rainy, so they won’t go in today.

  • The rabbit in our neighbourhood eats the weeds in the patio and the clover in my neighbour’s lawn. It is the squirrels who eat the pea and bean shoots. We have noticed though that once they are up a couple of inches, they stop (and wait for the peas and beans but that is another story). We use chicken wire, stapled to the wood around the raised beds and spread OVER the top of the beds. When the shoots are coming through the chicken wire, we take it off. Just something to think about.

  • Hey great fencing..Good job Stephen. Tim did it too and same kind of fence. But your garden looks way much better than ours.
