  • My son has many fine qualities.

An instinctual sense of self-preservation seems not to be one of them.

We were at a church potluck lunch today at someone’s house.  She had a gorgeous old pecan tree in the back yard.  We were all admiring it from the second-story deck, while Isaac and the owner’s dog played in the yard below.  When suddenly . . .

    *crackle*

    *crackle*

It was a mildly breezy day, and the wind was blowing through the branches.

    *crackle*

Isaac, noticing the crackling sound, stopped frolicking with the dog and looked for the source of the sound.  He appeared to realize that it was coming from the tree, because he walked underneath it and started staring up at it.

    *crackle*

    *groan*

He continued to stare while the tree continued to make more ominous noises.

    *creeeeaaaakkk*

“Isaac, would you mind coming up here for a minute?” I say calmly.

Isaac began meandering his way toward the deck, still craning his neck to see what was going on with the tree.  Under whose branches he was still standing.

    *CRACK*

“Whenever you’re ready, dear,” I prompt.

Finally, he got somewhere near the house, mostly away from most of the branches.

That’s when the branch decided to come down.  A very, very large one, but happily on the other side of the tree from where Isaac had been.

It did crush the chain-link fence it fell on.

And Isaac was a little more attentive to his surroundings for the rest of the day.

    *sigh*

I guess it’s good to know that I’m not completely unnecessary.  The kid still needs his mother, from time to time.

Sunday Question of the Day:  Are you a gaper or a runner?  Do you stand around trying to figure out what was going on, or do you make sure you’re safe first and ask questions later?

  • Oh yes, they need us. I have stopped mine from doing so many foolish things that I’ve begun to wonder about them. I can’t warn them of everything because their brains work so differently from mine. What mom would get up in the morning and think, “Today I need to tell the boys not to try to ride their bikes up the side of the house, even if it would be possible if they were in the Matrix movie.” ????? Gah! It boggles the mind. No more movies for those two.
