Moundbuilders
Although we will never cease to be Blue Devils in our hearts, we have now also become Moundbuilders.
In honor of their name, the college at which Stephen and I are now teaching has a tradition of mounding stones at a central location on campus. This tradition has spawned a beginning-of-the-year ceremony, where the college community gathers to add more stones to The Mound.
It’s quite a popular event.
There are speeches and introductions and prayers. (Yes, Virginia, this is a Christian college.)
And people bring stones or rocks that they’ve decorated specially for the event.
Some people bring little stones.
Some people bring enormous rocks.
And then they put the stones on The Mound.
Some people lay the stones carefully down.
And some people . . .
. . . just . . .
. . . hurl and hope for the best.
When everyone has had a chance to add their stone, they all get together and eat watermelon and snowcones.
We’re glad to have been there this year.
